Bodhi originates from the Sanskrit word “Bodhi”, which means “enlightenment, wisdom”. In Buddhism, Bodhi represents the complete understanding and awakening to the truth of the world. The core meaning of Bodhi is enlightenment and wisdom. In Buddhism, Bodhi is translated as “jue”, which means enlightenment. Bodhi bracelets can remind us to constantly maintain awareness of all things in the world, use wisdom to perceive the truth, and thus achieve inner liberation. Bodhi is not only a symbol, but also an important practical tool in Buddhist practice. Reciting Bodhi beads helps to focus the mind, enhance concentration and focus, and assist in spiritual cultivation. Wearing or holding Bodhi beads is believed to bring inner peace and tranquility, reduce anxiety and stress. Buddhism believes that twirling Bodhi beads while chanting sutras or meditating can help people focus their minds and calm complex thoughts. Nowadays, many people wear Bodhi bracelets, hoping to remind themselves to “slow down” through its symbolism. The Om Mani Padme Hum consists of six Sanskrit syllables, each representing a specific Buddhist concept and practice significance:
Om: It symbolizes the Buddha’s heart, representing the primordial energy of the universe and the wisdom, speech, and mind of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. It serves as the initial sound of mantras and symbolizes the unity of the Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya.
Mani: It means “Wish-fulfilling Pearl,” symbolizing the heart of the Treasury realm. In Buddhism, the Mani Pearl can fulfill the wishes of sentient beings like a precious gem, representing compassion and Bodhichitta.
Padme: It means “lotus”, symbolizing the heart of the Lotus Realm. The lotus rises from the mud yet remains unstained, representing the realm of practice and enlightenment amidst troubles, as well as pure wisdom.
Hum: Symbolizing the Vajra Heart, it represents the power to fully accomplish and destroy all karmic obstacles. It is the final syllable of the mantra, endowed with the indestructible power of Buddha nature.
