A young painter hit a creative block. She felt her talent had dried up and considered a career change. When I charted her BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny), I saw very distinct Sha Shen and Shang Guan energies—direct representations of art, inspiration, and creativity.
I asked her, “Before becoming a ‘painter,’ what was your favorite way to express yourself?”
She paused and said, “It was writing. I always won awards for my essays as a child, but later I thought painting was ‘cooler,’ so I gave it up.”
There lay the problem. Her creative talent was meant to surge through the channel of “words,” but she shut its gate, trying to divert all flow into the relatively narrower channel of “painting.” This caused energetic blockage and exhaustion.
I didn’t tell her to abandon painting. Instead, I suggested: “Pick up the pen again, even if it’s just writing a short poem daily. Let your creativity flow freely in its most original channel first.”
A month later, she excitedly told me she had started writing alongside painting. Not only did her inspiration fully return, but she also created a new series combining poetry and illustration that was very well-received.
