Taoist Five Thunder Talisman: Chief of All Talismans, Source of All Methods

The Taoist Five Thunder Talisman is one of the most powerful and revered talismans in Taoist culture. It is honored as the “Chief of All Talismans” and the “Source of All Methods” — a true king among talismans. Understanding the Five Thunder Talisman meaning begins with the Five Elements and the thunder forces they command.

What Is the Taoist Five Thunder Talisman?

In Taoist tradition, the Taoist Five Thunder Talisman is considered a talisman of extraordinary power. The name “Five Thunder” refers to the thunder forces corresponding to the Five Elements (五行): Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth.

This Taoist protection talisman is believed to have a powerful effect of warding off evil and upholding righteousness. It protects the bearer from negative forces and malevolent spirits.

The Taoist Five Thunder Talisman embodies the mysterious power and wisdom of Taoism. It integrates Yin-Yang and Five Elements philosophy, carrying the practitioner’s reverence for Heaven, Earth, and nature. Its creation and use follow strict rituals and specifications, and it is endowed with profound spiritual power — using the majesty of thunder to sweep away evil and restore balance to the world.

The talisman is composed of the talismanic forms of the Five Thunder Marshals. The Thunder Department has thirty-six marshals in total, each with different duties.

The Taoist Five Thunder Talisman combines the talismans of:

  1. Marshal Yin, the Earthly Tai Sui (地司太岁殷元帅)
  2. Marshal Zhou, the Divine Wind of Exorcism (神威驱邪周元帅)
  3. Marshal Zhao, the Golden Wheel of Wishes (金轮如意赵元帅)
  4. Marshal Zhang, the Flying Messenger of Response (飞捷报应张元帅)
  5. Marshal Ma, the Dipper Chief Spirit (斗口魁神马元帅)

Together, these Five Thunder Marshals form a powerful field of protection and blessing.

1. Marshal Yin, the Earthly Tai Sui

Marshal Yin, whose name is Yin Jiao, resides in the Northern Emperor’s Earthly Department of Inspection. He is honored as the “General of the Earthly Tai Sui,” the “Commander of the Earthly Department’s Demon-Subduing Thunder,” and the “Heavenly Worthy of Inconceivable Spiritual Power.”

Tai Sui is the deity who governs the year. It is said that auspicious matters should not clash with Tai Sui, and inauspicious matters should not offend it. When constructing or renovating, one should carefully avoid the direction of Tai Sui.

Due to his merits, Marshal Yin was appointed as the Thunder Tai Sui, governing the Earthly Department’s Demon-Subduing Court. The Sixty Jiazi Deities all fall under his command.

According to his sacred invocation:

“Marshal Yin commands all taboo spirits and forbids malevolent forces. His power shakes Heaven and Earth. With his supreme spiritual body, his merits pervade the universe. Where his golden bell rings, demons and monsters hide. Where his precious halberd turns, plagues and epidemics flee far away.”

Marshal Yin’s primary functions: resolving misfortune, dispelling negative energy, and suppressing evil.

2. Marshal Zhou, the Divine Wind of Exorcism

Marshal Zhou is one of the Four Great Guardian Marshals of Taoism. He is the Northern Wind-Wheel Marshal Who Destroys Ghosts and Subdues Demons.

Originally a demon named Guangze Dawang from Mount Doug, he had red hair, fangs, wind-fire wheels on his feet, and held a great moon weapon. He caused havoc with wind and storms.

He was eventually subdued by Patriarch Zhenwu, and the Jade Emperor bestowed upon him the title “Wind-Wheel Marshal Zhou.” He then followed Patriarch Zhenwu in cultivation.

Marshal Zhou’s primary function: driving away pestilence and evil spirits, protecting people’s health, and keeping illness at bay.

3. Marshal Zhao, the Golden Wheel of Wishes

Marshal Zhao, whose name is Zhao Gongming, is also known as the “Black Tiger Mysterious Altar Marshal Zhao” or “Zhao Xuantan.” He is one of the Four Great Guardian Marshals of Taoism.

After the Ming Dynasty, Zhao Gongming was revered as the God of Wealth. In matters of business and seeking wealth, he brings success and harmony. Prayers to him are said never to fail.

As the Orthodox God of Wealth of the Mysterious Altar, Marshal Zhao attracts wealth from all five directions.

Marshal Zhao’s primary functions: assisting in wealth acquisition, promoting harmony, and protecting marriage.

4. Marshal Zhang, the Flying Messenger of Response

Marshal Zhang, whose name is Zhang Jue, styled Yuanbo, is one of the Three Thunder Marshals of the Divine Empyrean Thunder Rites. He is also called the “Thunder Command Flying Messenger of Response.”

According to the Song Dynasty patriarch Bai Yuchan‘s Record of the Three Thunder Marshals’ Heart, Marshal Zhang is a descendant of Fuxi. The lineage passed from Fuxi to Shennong, to the Yellow Emperor, to Emperor Ku. His descendant Long Yan was born in Fufeng, and Fufeng gave birth to Zhi — who is Marshal Zhang. Because of his merits, he was enfeoffed at Zhang, and thus took Zhang as his surname.

Marshal Zhang wears a celestial crown, has a phoenix beak, and has fleshy wings on his back. He holds a command flag in his right hand and a command tablet in his left.

He, along with Marshal Deng and Marshal Xin, are known as the “Three Thunder Marshals.” They command the thunder, cloud, lightning, and rain departments, responsible for punishing the five great sins and rewarding good and punishing evil.

In Taoist rituals, Marshal Zhang is often summoned during rain prayers and Dipper worship ceremonies.

Marshal Zhang’s primary functions: calming fright, capturing evil, dispelling negative energy, and boosting luck and fortune.

5. Marshal Ma, the Dipper Chief Spirit

Marshal Ma, also known as the Great Emperor Huaguang, is one of the Four Great Guardian Deities of Taoism.

His full title is: “Orthodox One Dipper Chief Spirit, Golden-Armed Fire Rhinoceros Great Immortal, Three-Eyed Numinous Officer, Five Manifestations Great Emperor Huaguang, Taiyi Thunder-Sound Immovable Heavenly Worthy.”

His name is Ma Sheng, and the Jade Emperor bestowed upon him the name “Xu.”

According to legend, he is a transformation of the Sixth Star of the Southern Dipper. He was born with three heads and nine eyes, holds a jade halberd and golden brick, and rides a fire rhinoceros. He can drive away evil, cure epidemics, cut down demons, and save sentient beings.

Marshal Ma serves as a guardian beside Wenchang, the God of Literature. After completing his merits, he was commanded by the Jade Emperor to guard the Dipper Palace and became the Chief Marshal of the Northern Dipper.

He is worshipped in different regions with different stories — sometimes as a brave warrior, sometimes as a mysterious supernatural figure associated with the Four Great Guardian Marshals.

He is often called the “Fire God” because he is skilled in playing with fire and hiding golden bricks and fire elixirs. In folk tradition, the “Huaguang Festival” is held in the eighth and ninth lunar months to pray for protection from fire and lasting peace.

Marshal Ma’s birthday is celebrated on the 28th day of the ninth lunar month.

Marshal Ma’s primary functions: driving out demons, capturing ghosts, pursuing evil spirits, and protecting life and body.
